10-26-2023 Dollars & Sense, Girl Math
Wednesday Oct 25, 2023
Wednesday Oct 25, 2023
While Marion Gilman, CFP® is off enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean weather, we’re excited to have our Director of Financial Planning, Christian Karcher, CFP® join us for this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense. We usually talk about financial advice in a language you can understand, but we’re going to talk about an interesting topic that was brought up over the weekend while Marc was hanging out with his family and friends. Have you ever heard of girl math?
If you’re part of the younger generation, you may have heard about girl math online. It’s a series of rules that people have developed to justify some money spending and decisions. Do you buy coffee out a lot? If you do, here’s an example for you: If you’ve already preloaded your Starbucks app/card with $10, grab a coffee at the drive-thru and leave, that’s free coffee. Well, in your mind it’s free since your card was already loaded with the $10 and you didn’t need to deduct any money from your bank account. Interesting outlook, right?
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Christian discuss how different generations view money in a language you can understand.

10-19-2023 Dollars & Sense, Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds
Thursday Oct 19, 2023
Thursday Oct 19, 2023
We’re back again with another episode of Dollars & Sense, where we try to provide some financial advice in a language you can understand. We’re in the middle of October, Christmas trees are out in the stores (WHAT?!), and Halloween decorations are up. Today we’re going to have a little bit of fun and talk about some scenarios and situations that we’ve run into here in our office, some conversations we’ve heard on the street, and stuff we’ve seen on TV and in social media.
A great orator has a way of getting in front of a crowd and influencing people to make a decision despite the fact that it makes no sense whatsoever, but because they’re so compelling in the way they present it, they easily build a large following. Kim Kardashian is a prime example here! What influences people to make decisions just really blows us away.
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss how the world around us can persuade us to make decisions in a language you can understand.

10-12-2023 Dollars & Sense, The Crisis in Israel and the State of the Economy
Thursday Oct 12, 2023
Thursday Oct 12, 2023
Fall is setting in, there’s a chill in the air, and the leaves are changing colors here in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, our focus has been on the horrific terrorist attacks going on in Israel. As Israel has stated, this is their September 11th. If you think about the size of the population of Israel compared to the U.S.A., it’s almost six to ten times worse than the number of deaths and destruction that they’ve had in a single day. We have absolute full confidence in the power of Israel and the support of the American Government along with other government entities to hopefully wipe out terrorism in the Middle East. Our hearts are with every single person affected by this act of terrorism.
One of the questions people continue to ask us about with the war in Israel and Gaza, the challenges with the economy, and what’s going on with Ukraine, is how does that impact the state of the economy? One of the things we review frequently with our clients is what has happened over the past year. We also look at the bigger picture by looking back three years, five years, ten years, etc., to show the value of long-term investing. We’re happy to report that over the past year we have seen positive returns after a terrible 2022.
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss how the war in Israel and current events could affect the economy and stock market in a language you can understand.

10-05-2023 Dollars & Sense, The Leaves Aren’t the Only Thing Changing
Thursday Oct 05, 2023
Thursday Oct 05, 2023
The Topsfield Fair is in full swing and all of us at the Bnai Brith Booth hosted the 5th Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest! Contestants had 7 minutes to consume ¼ lb. Hebrew National All-Beef Hot Dogs (including the bun). The winner ate 11 hot dogs, which is pretty wild, and we all celebrated another successful year!
The leaves are changing, but that’s not the only thing changing – so are the markets. September was a tough month and for those still waiting to receive their statements, our advice is not to even look at it. This is why we can’t stress enough the importance of staying the course. If there’s money you’ll need to use in a year or two, the stock market is probably not the place for your money. If you’re looking for a low-risk option, check out money market funds.
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss what’s going on with the stock market in a language you can understand.

09-28-2023 Dollars & Sense, Will the Impending Government Shutdown Affect You?
Wednesday Sep 27, 2023
Wednesday Sep 27, 2023
Here we go again. Perhaps one of the reasons the market is acting so unfavorably over the past week or two is because the government has the potential to shut down on October 1st. Déjà Vu all over again. As a matter of fact, Marion was just reading statistics from an article that stated we’ve apparently had 21 government shutdowns since 1976. You’d think with that many shutdowns that our country would be no more, right? That’s not exactly how it works, let us explain…
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss how a potential government shutdown could affect you in a language you can understand.

09-21-2023 Dollars & Sense, On a Scale 1-10, How Prepared Are You For Retirement?
Thursday Sep 21, 2023
Thursday Sep 21, 2023
The much anticipated Topsfield Fair is coming up and Marc is looking forward to seeing you there. He’ll be volunteering at the Bnai Brith Booth alongside his wife, Laura, and about 120 other volunteers serving some of the best brisket, Hebrew National Hot Dogs, and Jewish Fare on the East Coast! As an added incentive, if you visit his booth and ask for him, he will have a special surprise for you!
A recent eye-opening report in the Wall Street Journal talked about how ill-prepared people are for retirement. The results tell a story of how under-aware we are of life in America and that we see our world within the sphere in which we live. But does this report tell the whole story? We dig a little deeper…
Whether you’re fully confident in your current retirement strategy or are looking for a second opinion, we welcome you to contact our team today.
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss why you should always get the full context on stories being reported by the media in a language you can understand.

09-14-2023 Dollars & Sense, Time in the Market it Better Than Timing the Market
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
When are often asked, “What do you hope to get as a rate of return on your investments over time?” The goal is 6-8%. However, the likelihood of 6-8% in one year is slim to none. Investing is for the long term! The longer you are in the market, the better chance you will have a higher rate of return.
Don’t let negative headlines or soundbites drive your financial decisions. Sadly, pessimism drives action more than optimism. The goal of these scare tactics is to get a reaction, so think before you act!
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion reflect on market downturns and why time in the market is better than timing the market.

Thursday Sep 07, 2023
Thursday Sep 07, 2023
There comes a point in time when you have to understand whether you’re making a rational decision or a reasonable decision. We think you also need to recognize when you’re making a ridiculous decision. We don’t think it’ll surprise you where you make the most ridiculous decisions. Think back to some of the regrettable decisions you’ve made over your lifetime. We’re betting you were probably in your younger years. Did we hit the nail on the head?
Take a guess at the age a recent study suggested we begin making smart financial decisions. We’ll give you a hint – it’s typically the time people get serious about their future and come to us for financial advice.
You should feel confident in your financial team, and be comfortable asking them anything. Yes, we mean anything. If you’re ready to start a conversation about your future, contact our team today.
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marc and Marion discuss the three major “R’s” of decision making in a language you can understand.

Dollars & Sense, Tick-Tock: Have You Had Your Annual Financial Review?
Thursday Aug 31, 2023
Thursday Aug 31, 2023
When you were told to complete your homework as a child, you probably moaned and groaned. If you partner with our team, there’s one homework assignment that must be completed each year – scheduling your annual financial review. We promise you’ll thank us later!
At Freedman Financial, the very last action item on your financial plan is to review your plan on an annual basis. Why is this important? All of the relationships with our clients start off by completing a financial plan. During this comprehensive process we try to emphasize that it is an ongoing process and not a “one and done”. So much changes in your life over the course of 1, 5, 10, 20+ years and your financial plan should reflect that.
If you’re in need of a financial review or are interested in a second opinion, contact our team today.
Tune in to this week’s episode of Dollars & Sense as Marion and Christian discuss the three major categories that could potentially change your financial plan in a language you can understand.
